Purposive Communication is about writing, speaking, and presenting to different audiences and for various purposes. This course develops students’ communicative competence and enhances their cultural and intercultural awareness through multimodal tasks that provide them opportunities for communicating effectively and appropriately to a multicultural audience in a local or global context. It equips student with tools for critical evaluation of a variety of texts and focuses on the power of language and the impact of mages to emphasize the importance of conveying message responsibly. The knowledge, skills, and insights that students gain from this course may be used in their other academic endeavors, their chosen disciplines, and either future career as they compose and produce relevant oral, written, audio-visual and/or web-based output for various purposes.

This three-unit course prepares students to design effective technical documents by learning the principles, techniques, and skills needed to conduct scientific, technical, or business writing. It also covers giving of instruction in the writing of reports and letters, in the preparation and presentation of oral reports, and other exercises applicable to a wide range of disciplines and careers. Research techniques, information design, effective use of graphics, and preparation and presentation of oral reports are also blended.

This course introduces undergraduate students to the English Language tests to foreign and second language speakers of English. It covers the nature and style of International English Language Testing System (IELTS), Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), and Occupational English Test (OET). Drills and exercises are provided for students to hone their English proficiency and better prepare for the aforesaid examinations.
